Community Conversations
Village gathered the voice of the Belconnen community
A Village for Every Child is focused on Improving Outcomes for Children living in Belconnen. As a part of the Village Community Conversations, we invited community members to share their thoughts on matters critical to the well-being of our children.
In Belconnen there are more children developmentally vulnerable than in the rest of Canberra, and we know that Canberra is faring poorly against the national average and the data continues to trend poorly. We also know that despite a large network of support services in Canberra and Belconnen, outcomes are getting worse. Meaning, Belconnen’s children are at a much higher risk of facing barriers to engaging fully in life. We want to change this!
What we heard!
In pursuit of improving wellbeing outcomes for children in Belconnen, Village has spent the last 5 months surveying the Belconnen community to deepen our understanding of what aspirations and concerns families hold for their children. These insights will allow Village to represent the community voice and incorporate community-led decision making into our future plans.
Running from the 13th of July to the 1st of December 2023, Village’s Community Conversations survey was able to capture over 100 voices, opinions and concerns relating to the wellbeing of Belconnen’s children and we are pleased with the results. Of the gathered survey responses, 95% were taken from community members living within Belconnen and 73% were taken from the parent of a child 5 years old or younger. Additionally, 45% of survey respondents indicated they were of a diverse cultural background other than ‘Australian’.
The team is currently reviewing the data, pulling out common key themes, quotes and statistics which will be used in the community profile. A community conversations report will be published in early 2024.
